What, Then, Shall We Do? (Guest Speaker: George Lakey)

George Lakey, 85, was brought up an evangelical whose call to become a boy minister was abruptly ended by his preaching a sermon urging that it is God’s will that there be racial equality. In college he found a religious home among the Quakers (Religious Society of Friends), and from time to time has been recognized by his home congregation to be carrying a particular ministry for peace, justice, or nonviolence.

He taught social ethics for four years at Crozer Theological Seminary (American Baptist), in its division named the Martin Luther King, Jr. School of Social Change.

He participated in the Philadelphia Council of Churches and also in the National Council of Churches. He has spoken in hundreds of churches and meetinghouses over the years in both the U.S. and Europe, notably in a nationally-broadcast sermon from the cathedral in Uppsala, Sweden.
