Right Relation (Guest Speaker: Andrew Franklin)

Luke 10:25-29

Andrew Franklin has formally and informally studied classical, modern, and comparative philosophy, theology, history, and meaning-making. He enjoys discussing spiritual journeys using math metaphors and song lyrics.

Luke 10:25-29:
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And the lawyer answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And Jesus said to the lawyer, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

But the lawyer, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

From The Journal of John Woolman:

‘...true religion consists of …an inward life… exercising true justice and goodness, not only toward all men, but also toward the brute creatures; [for] as the mind is moved by an inward principle to love God … it is moved to love Him in all his manifestations in the visible world; … to say we love God… unseen, and at the same time exercise cruelty toward the least creature …is a contradiction in itself. [And I] believed that sincere, upright-hearted people, in every society, who truly love God, were accepted of Him.’

Quotes & Queries:

John Woolman:

“If a man successful in business expends a part of his income in things of no real use, while the poor employed by him pass through difficulties in getting the necessaries of life, this requires his serious attention.”

“May we look upon our estates, our treasures, the furniture of our houses, and our garments, and try whether the seeds of war have nourishment in these, our possessions.”

What can I do to change the tragedy of people taking more into the love of giving and caring?

How am I sustaining right-relationship with my sacred context? With all our context?
